Why Rent a Car on Djerba?

Djerba is Tunisia's island paradise — but public transport is minimal and taxis are expensive. A few louages (shared minibuses) connect Houmt Souk to Midoun, but they do not reach the beaches, the pottery village of Guellala, or the hidden coves on the south coast. Taxis are unmetered and drivers routinely overcharge tourists.

With a rental car, you unlock the real Djerba. Drive to a deserted beach on the east coast for the morning, visit the ancient Ghriba Synagogue after lunch, watch potters at work in Guellala, and finish with sunset drinks in Houmt Souk — all in one day, on your own schedule.

Suggested Routes from Djerba Airport

  • Djerba Island Loop (1 day): Airport → Houmt Souk → Ghriba Synagogue → Guellala → south coast beaches → Midoun → east coast beaches → back to hotel. Around 80 km total.
  • Mainland Desert Trip (1 day): Cross the El Kantara causeway → Matmata troglodyte homes (Star Wars filming location) → Douz (gateway to the Sahara) → return via Kebili. Around 350 km round trip.
  • Tataouine & Berber Villages (1 day): Causeway → Tataouine → Ksar Ouled Soltane → Chenini → Douiret → return. Around 280 km round trip. Stunning hilltop granaries and Star Wars landscapes.

The island is compact — just 25 km across — so even beginners feel comfortable driving here. And with the El Kantara Roman causeway connecting Djerba to the mainland (a simple 7 km drive, no toll), you can combine beach relaxation with Sahara adventure from a single base.

Djerba is the only island airport in Tunisia. Rent a car here and you get beach, culture and desert — all within a day's drive.

Driving Tips for Djerba and Beyond

  • Djerba is easy to drive — flat terrain, paved roads, light traffic. The island is only 25 km across, so you cannot really get lost. Village streets can be narrow, so take it slow in Houmt Souk and Guellala.
  • El Kantara causeway — the 7 km road connecting Djerba to the mainland is straightforward. Drive at a steady pace and enjoy the views of the lagoon on both sides. No toll, no border check.
  • Driving is on the right — same as mainland Europe. If you are from the UK, take extra care at roundabouts and intersections.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on autoroutes (mainland). Speed cameras are common — stick to the limits.
  • Mainland highways are good — once you cross to the mainland, the roads to Tataouine, Matmata and Tozeur are paved and well-signposted. Secondary roads in the south may be narrower but are drivable.
  • Avoid driving at night in rural areas — livestock, unlit vehicles and pedestrians on the road. Keep night driving to towns and main roads.

Very easy. Djerba is only 25 km across, roads are paved and flat, and traffic is light outside Houmt Souk. Village streets can be narrow, so drive slowly in built-up areas. There are no motorways or complex junctions — just simple two-lane roads connecting the towns and beaches.
