Understanding Tunisian Road Types
A quick guide to road classifications you will encounter
A — Autoroute (Highway)
Modern toll motorways with dual carriageways, rest areas, and speed limits of 110 km/h. Excellent road surface. Examples: A1 (Tunis-Sfax), A3 (Tunis-Oued Zarga), A4 (Tunis-Bizerte).
RN — Route Nationale (National Road)
Free national roads connecting major cities and towns. Generally single carriageway with a 90 km/h speed limit. Road quality varies from good to fair depending on the region.
GP — Grande Proximite (Local Road)
Local roads connecting smaller towns and villages. Free to use, typically single lane in each direction. Speed limit is 50-70 km/h. Good for scenic drives along the coast or through countryside.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about driving between Tunisian cities
No, tolls in Tunisia are very affordable. Most toll sections cost between 2 and 8 TND (approximately 0.60 to 2.50 EUR). The full Tunis to Sfax motorway toll is around 12 TND total. Tolls are paid in cash (Tunisian Dinar) at toll booths.
Motorways (A1, A3, A4) are in excellent condition with smooth surfaces, clear markings, and rest areas. National roads (RN) vary from good to fair. Some rural and desert roads may have potholes or sand drifts. An SUV is recommended for off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on national roads, and 110 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras are common on highways. Always observe posted signs as limits can vary in certain zones.
Fuel stations are frequent on motorways and in cities. In the south (Tozeur, Douz, Tataouine area), stations are less frequent so fill up whenever you can. Most stations accept cash only. Diesel and unleaded petrol are widely available.
For motorway trips (Tunis-Sousse-Sfax), any sedan or compact car is comfortable. For desert routes (Tozeur, Douz, Djerba via inland roads), we recommend an SUV like the Hyundai Tucson or MG ZS for extra comfort and ground clearance.
