Tips for First-Time Drivers in Tunisia
- Driving is on the right — same as mainland Europe and North America. If you are from the UK, Ireland or Australia, take extra care at roundabouts and intersections.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on autoroutes. Speed cameras are common — stick to the limits.
- Fuel is cheap — among the cheapest in the Mediterranean. A full tank of diesel costs roughly 60-80 TND (about €18-24). You will not spend much on fuel even on a long road trip.
- Roads are good on main axes — the autoroute network (A1, A3, A4) is modern and well-maintained. Secondary roads in the south may be narrower but are paved.
- Avoid driving at night in rural areas — livestock, unlit vehicles and pedestrians on the road. Keep night driving to cities and autoroutes.
- Police checkpoints are common and routine — just slow down, show your driving licence and passport, and you will be waved through. Be polite and calm.
